Rachel Beck is a singer-songwriter from Stratford, P.E.I. Known for her piano melodies and emotive vocals, Beck's lead single "Reckless Heart" earned several 2019 Music PEI Award and 2019 East Coast Music Award nominations. Her new album Stronger Than You Know is out now.
Beck is currently reading bestselling novel Where the Crawdads Sing by American author and zoologist Delia Owens. She stopped by The Next Chapter to tell us why.
"This novel is part coming-of-age story, part murder mystery — but mostly a story of resilience, survival and the human spirit. What I connected with was the way that the heroine, known as Kya or 'The Marsh Girl' in the story, is basically abandoned by her whole family. She lives in isolation out in the marsh, but she just has this incredible strength and resilience.
I really enjoyed the read. And it's got me longing to spend a little more time in nature and connect with the earth.
"The marsh becomes like a character in a story. And it's so beautiful, the descriptive writing and the way that she connects with the earth. I found Kya to be such an interesting character because she spent so much time alone with nature and with her thoughts, and she just didn't have a lot of human contact at certain points in the story.
"I am the extrovert's extrovert and she was so different from me. But I found her fascinating in that way. I really enjoyed the read. And it's got me longing to spend a little more time in nature and connect with the earth."
