The Current for June 17, 2021
Today on The Current, we're celebrating Canada's class of 2021. With graduations delayed or cancelled due to the pandemic, we're talking to graduating high school students from across the country about the year they've had, and their hopes and dreams for the future.
Matt Galloway talks to Brayden Harsent from Rutland Senior Secondary School in Kelowna, B.C.; Romie Smith, Kyree Thompson, Nacari Smith, and Naijaun David from Dartmouth High in Nova Scotia; Carson Gray and Amy Plaggenhoef in P.E.I., who raised the bar for promposals; Jilliian, Amanda and Joshua Feld, siblings who started a business selling lawns that celebrate grads in Toronto; Wyatt McNeil from Ursula Franklin Academy in Toronto; Kyran Alikamik from East Three Secondary School in Inuvik, N.W.T.; Davina Clunis from University Hill Secondary School in Vancouver; Ummalhair Owolewa from Central Technical School in Toronto; Anthony Letourneau from Cégep de Matane in Quebec; and Justin Ko, graduating from Pierre Eliott Trudeau High School in Markham.
We'll also hear from an outstanding valedictorian: Sarah Matrai, a grade 12 student at Springbank Community High School, west of Calgary. Sarah tries to bring a little colour to the world in everything she does, including her penchant for neon platform crocs. She says people tell her she won't be taken seriously, but she has proven that "you can be valedictorian and still like fun things."
Plus, we hear some words of advice and encouragement from Dionne Deer, principal at Glenlawn Collegiate in Winnipeg; Wes Hall, CEO of Kingsdale Advisors, and the new Dragon on CBC's Dragons' Den; and actor and star of Kim's Convenience Paul Sun-Hyung Lee.
