Tapestry

Who are you wearing? God, of course.

Lauren Winner, author of the book Wearing God has compiled a list of metaphors for God that are more relevant to her everyday life.

When was the last time you met a shepherd?  How about a king?

Lauren Winner says that the language people use to think about God is pretty far removed from everyday life. Few of us spend our days mingling with shepherds and royalty. In her book, Wearing God, Winner has compiled a list of metaphors for God that are more relevant to her everyday life. Number one on that list: clothing.

Winner says clothing is a powerful image for the divine because our clothes sit right up against the good parts of us, and the bad.

In her conversation with Mary Hynes, Winner talks about other lesser-known metaphors for God that may make more sense in our modern world including God as comedian, beekeeper or even dog.

Lauren Winner is an Episcopal priest who teaches at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina.
