Elephants are known for their highly developed cognitive abilities, their communication system and the fact that they live in complex social groups.
But a new book by Dr. Caitlin O'Connell, one of the world's leading elephant experts, and a Consulting Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at Stanford University, takes our understanding of the elephant world even further and over a longer period of time.

The book, Elephant Don - The Politics of a Pachyderm Posse, explores the hierarchy of male elephant society through the story of Greg - the top ranking elephant in his so-called 'boys club' in Namibia. The friendships, bonds and range of emotions faced by these elephants are found to be not unlike those of males in human social groups.
