What is it about the 1960s that still has a hold on our imaginations?

It's a musical era that's often romanticized as a time of discovery and possibility. Much of its soundtrack was born in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Laurel Canyon, the home of the Mamas and the Papas, the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield.

A new documentary called Echo In The Canyon takes a closer look at the unique sound that emerged from that time and place.

At the centre of the film is Jakob Dylan, lead singer of the Wallflowers and Bob Dylan's son. He interviews key artists from the Laurel Canyon scene and also records covers of their songs with a lineup of talent that includes Fiona Apple, Beck and Cat Power.

Dylan joined q's Tom Power along with the film's director, Andrew Slater, to tell us more about the documentary, the musical breakthroughs that came out of the Laurel Canyon scene.
