Tarell Alvin McCraney on seeing his life reflected on stage and on screen in The Brothers Size and Moonlight

McCraney is the playwright behind the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight. Later this week, one of his earliest plays, The Brothers Size, will have its Canadian premiere in Toronto.

Tarell Alvin McCraney has been writing from a deeply personal place since he started his career — and it's working for him.

He's one of the most acclaimed playwrights in the world: the chair of the Department of Playwriting at Yale, a MacArthur Genius and the screenwriter behind the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight.

Later this week, one of McCraney's earliest plays, The Brothers Size, will have its Canadian premiere in Toronto. It tells the story of two brothers, one of whom is trying to keep the other from returning to prison. Like Moonlight, the play takes an honest look at intimacy, masculinity and brotherhood.

McCraney joined q's Tom Power from a studio in Chicago to talk about the play, which opens at the Soulpepper Theatre Company on May 7 and runs until May 26.
