Why did Helen Morgan kill her husband, jazz trumpeter, Lee Morgan?
Director Kasper Collin's new documentary, I Called Him Morgan, takes a look at the life of jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan and his wife Helen, who shot him dead in 1972.
Lee Morgan was a great jazz trumpeter who was snapped up by Dizzy Gillespie at the age of 18 to be part of Gillespie's big band. He was one of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, he played on John Coltrane's Blue Train album, all before stepping into the spotlight on his own. But, in 1972, Morgan's life was cut short. He was performing onstage at a club in New York when his wife Helen pulled out a gun and shot him dead.
A documentary getting a lot of Oscar buzz right now, titled I Called Him Morgan, tells the story of Lee and Helen. Today, guest host Ali Hassan will speak to the film's director, Kasper Collin. I Called Him Morgan is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
