War Machine is based on Michael Hastings' best-seller The Operators which is about U.S. Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal's tenure in Afghanistan.

Topher Grace stars in War Machine, the new Netflix film headlined by Brad Pitt as Glen McMahon, a U.S. general parachuted into Afghanistan in 2009. The film also stars Ben Kingsley and Tilda Swinton. McMahon's frank opinions about senior government officials are published in a Rolling Stone interview with the officer and Grace's character, Matt Little, is McMahon's media advisor.
