Director Patty Jenkins has responded on Twitter to comments made by filmmaker James Cameron about Jenkins' hit movie Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman has been the most successful major-studio film of the summer, grossing roughly a billion dollars worldwide.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Guardian that touched on the topic of strong and complex female characters in films, Cameron said the "objectified icon" of Wonder Woman was "a step backwards," and the "back-patting" over the film — which he said he liked — was "misguided."

Jenkins responded on her Twitter feed. While she acknowledged Cameron's praise of her debut Oscar-winning film Monster, she said the Canadian-born director's inability to understand the Wonder Woman character was "unsurprising."

Her full comment is posted below.

Jenkins is currently finalizing negotiations to direct the sequel to Wonder Woman, which is due out in December 2019
