Dane Cook conquered his nerves by doing stand-up comedy
Dane Cook decided he wanted to be a comedian at the age 15, but it was a strange career choice considering his introversion.
Fans probably know Cook now as a loud and unabashed comic but growing up, he'd have panic attacks on his way to school just thinking of the idea of having to stand in front of people. "When I was in character, I felt confident and I felt brave," Cook says of his ability to fight off nerves through comedy.
Doing open mics in Boston clubs confirmed his ambitions: "Almost immediately I was like, I'm more comfortable here than I am in my day-to-day."
"I started to take the things I learned, the tools from onstage, and implement them into my life," he continues. "Just using humour to get me in and out of situations that previously I didn't have faith in myself doing."
