Enchanting China's Gong Linna is putting a spin on traditional Chinese music

Gong Linna on how she developed her unique singing style and the way she is uniting China through her music.
Chinese Vocalist Gong Linna (Zhou Tao)

Enchanting China's Gong Linna performs a variety of different voices, from a child's voice to a man's, when she is singing traditional Chinese music. The singer mixes the tones unique to these voices to create a new kind of vocal style and sound.

From Chinese singing techniques and folk traditions, Linna is defying the borders of genre as she combines chamber music with pop. "My music awards are not important," Linna admits, "the melody, the music is important." What gives her pleasure is the ability to unite both the youth and older generations of China through her music.

Linna says "in China now pop music is like American music" and the youth are not connecting much to the traditional folk songs. But everyone can appreciate Linna's singing for her true and strong Chinese voice. "The audience, between the small children and the old people, they like it very much," she says.

For now Linna performs in Enchanting China, an ode to China's musical masterpieces. The performance features the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, the Ottawa Bach Choir and Canadian guest singers.
