Shad credits A Tribe Called Quest for inspiring him to make music with a social conscience. To illustrate, veteran Canadian hip-hop artist K-OS and DJ Skratch Bastid cover a medley of their music.
Shad says Midnight Marauders (1993) was one of the first tapes he ever bought. Although he didn't understand all their lyrics as a kid, he knew even then that they'd be "profoundly influential".
"Music can sometimes resonate on a level you don't understand yet," he says.
