'You have a meltdown when we play Scrabble. It’s not my fault you’re always left with vowels,' sings Kathleen Edwards in her hilariously honest new holiday song. 'Auntie Sue goes on a really long walk to buy weed from the swingers living down the block.' (YouTube)

We're heading into holiday season, and soon the airwaves will be full of songs of about jingle bells and white Christmases and the "most wonderful time of the year."

But Kathleen Edwards has just released a far more honest portrayal of the yuletide season.

In her new song It's Christmastime (Let's Just Survive), the favourite Canadian artist sings about everyone descending on her parents' house, and experiencing everything from Scrabble meltdowns to family squabbles to a cat that urinates on the Christmas tree.

"Uncle Dave and Sue bring their feral cat, and homemade wine that tastes like crap," sings Edwards. "Oh it's Christmas time. Let's just survive."

Edwards also delves into some of the more questionable holiday gifts. "Thanks for the self-help book but I have it already. I got it last year when I was dating that loser Jerry," she sings. "And I get that you're loving the new John Mayer but I don't even have a CD player."

In the song, mom criticizes dad for the mashed potatoes, but dad's had four martinis so he doesn't notice, and when a cat pees on the Christmas tree, the liquid soaks through the iPad someone has bought her. Sings Edwards, "Is it too soon to ask, 'Did you get AppleCare with that?'"

The festive track is the first original song Edwards has released since 2012, and appears on a new holiday compilation called A Dualtone Christmas, which includes tracks by Mt. Joy, the Lone Bellow, Amos Lee, Wild Child, Delta Sprit, Ivan & Alyosha and Langhorne Slim.

A Dualtone Christmas is out Dec. 6.
