5 things you need to know about the Disaster Artist
James Franco's critically-acclaimed movie about the worst movie ever made.
The latest film from James Franco, the Disaster Artist, is based on the events that lead to the production of Tommy Wiseau's 2003 B-movie cult film The Room, which has been dubbed the "Citizen Kane of bad movies." The Disaster Artist, on the other hand, is receiving critical acclaim and currently has a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Below, 5 things you need to know about the Disaster Artist.
1. In order to make the Room, Wiseau raised $6-million, but he's never been completely open with how he secured that much money. owever, Wiseau has admitted that part of it came from selling leather jackets imported from Korea.
2. The Disaster Artist was based on a book of the same name by supporting actor in the Room, Greg Sestero, who wrote about his experiences in making the film. When the rights were bought by Seth Rogen's production team in 2014, Franco immediately signed up to direct and play the lead.
3. Franco stayed in character the whole time while filming, using Wiseau's accent and phrases. Franco, for his part, had been practising dialect for years, and one of his first jobs after he dropped out of UCLA was at a McDonald's drive-thru where he would practice the accents while taking orders.
4. Wiseau has said that two actors could play him, Johnny Depp or James Franco.
5. According to Franco, Wiseau approves of 99.9 percent of the film. The 0.1 percent he doesn't approve? The lighting.
