'I drove 9 hours to West Virginia just to get McDonald's pizza'

There are only two McDonald's locations in the world serving pizza — and three friends drove 800km to buy it.
There are only two McDonald's in North America that serve pizza.

It was the road trip of a lifetime.

Nathan Dallaire, Mitchell Boughner and Dan Sutherland are three self-described nineties kids — when McDonald's pizza was sold in Canada.

This March, they set out from Ontario hoping to indulge in the elusive McDonald's pizza, now only served in two of the company's locations in the U.S.

Their destination was Spencer, West Virginia and it took nine hours on the road before they reached their nostalgic and grease-soaked promised land.

And, they captured it all on camera.

As they pulled up to the Golden Arches, the anticipation and excitement mounted.
Nathan Dallaire, Mitchell Boughner and Dan Sutherland, that much closer to McDonald's pizza, celebrate their arrival in West Virginia.

"Going into that moment, we actually didn't know for sure whether or not they had McDonald's pizza", Nathan told Out In The Open, "and in the beginning of the trip, we were just like 'it would be really funny if we filmed this and we got there, and it turned out they didn't have McDonald's pizza at all.'"

The trio erupted in shrieks of jubilation when they saw the sign promoting pizza at the entrance.

"To drive nine hours to get McDonald's pizza, that was kind of all the excitement at that moment, to finally see that it was there, it was all just coming out. I couldn't really control myself," said Mitchell.

Upon consumption, the pizza garnered disparate reviews, but everyone agreed it brought back childhood memories.

"It tasted exactly how I remember it, but now that I'm an adult and can have a lot of other pizzas to compare it against, it was pretty alright pizza," Nathan conceded.

However, at the end of the day and after a long drive home, it was more about the memories made than the meal eaten.

Nathan tells Out In The Open that "it was absolutely worth it."
