Overheard at the grand opening of a new grocery store in Brokenhead, Man.: "I'm the first!"

Normally, a new grocery store wouldn't prompt whoops of joy from a mob of customers.

But for the people of Brokenhead (population 700), their trip to buy groceries just got a lot shorter and, hopefully, a bit cheaper. That's because they can now avoid driving almost half an hour to the store in Selkirk, Man.

Bonus: The new grocery is owned by Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, and employs 11 local people.

The new store in Brokenhead is the community's response to the rising cost of accessing and buying food. For more stories of how Canadians are tackling the challenge of food security, check out this episode of DNTO.
