Frank Scarcello to ask for vote recount in Westfort
A candidate in the Westfort ward will speak to the city clerk this week, to ask about the process for a recount of ballots in Monday's election.
A defeated candidate in Thunder Bay's Westfort ward will speak to the city clerk this week, to ask about the process for a recount of ballots in Monday's election.
Frank Scarcello lost to incumbent Joe Virdiramo by 45 votes.
"I've been flooded with requests from supporters asking me to ask for a recount. And, given that the margin of victory was only 45 votes, I think that it's a fair ask."
The Municipal Elections Act states that a recount is automatic only if there is a tie between candidates.
A local council or Superior Court judge are the only two parties that can order a recount.
The same method that was used to count the ballots originally would be used in any recount, unless ordered otherwise by a judge.
A municipal council may order a recount within 30 days after the clerk has declared the results of the election.
