An inmate was stabbed Monday morning at Her Majesty's Penitentiary in St. John's.

A spokesperson for the justice department says the man was stabbed by another inmate around 8:15 a.m.

He was taken to the medical unit at the prison, but a release said his injuries did not require him to be taken to hospital.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was called, and the major crimes unit is now investigating the incident.

The justice department is also doing its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
