Police have arrested a man who escaped from jail in southern Newfoundland Saturday and a woman from Ontario who they say was intent on helping him flee.

Andrew Kenneth Parsons,  35, was arrested  by RCMP officers Tuesday night after a foot chase through a wooded area near Marystown in southern Newfoundland.

Two RCMP police dog units were instrumental in the capture, police said in a news release. The arrests were made after police received a tip from the public.

Police said the woman from Ontario had arrived in Newfoundland recently aiming to help Parsons.

Parsons escaped from the detachment's lockup in Marystown Saturday morning when an employee arrived to put a new mattress in his cell, the RCMP said, adding charges related to his escape and the time he spent on the run are expected.

Parsons had been in custody as he awaited a court appearance on two charges of sexual interference.

More details on the woman who was arrested will be released Wednesday, police said.
