An estimated 3,900 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2017, according to new statistics from the Canadian Cancer Society. (CBC)

New cancer rate statistics from across Canada have been released, and it's estimated hundreds will die from the disease this year in Newfoundland and Labrador and even more will be diagnosed.

The Canadian Cancer Statistics 2017 report was released Tuesday by the Canadian Cancer Society in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada and Statistics Canada.

The report provides updated statistics for cancer across the country, including the sobering estimate that nearly one in two Canadians will face a cancer diagnosis at some point in their life.

Prostate and breast cancer most common

In Newfoundland and Labrador, an estimated 3,900 people will be diagnosed with cancer in 2017, with 1,550 expected to die from the disease, according to the report.

It also says that prostate cancer is the most common form of the disease faced by men in the province, with 450 expected to be diagnosed this year.

For women, breast cancer remains the most diagnosed from of cancer in Newfoundland and Labrador, with an estimated 510 to be diagnosed in 2017.
