Police have charged two women with kidnapping in connection with the alleged abduction of a five-year-old boy earlier this week on Montreal's South Shore.

The women, Ruixue Yang, 65, and Xin Wang, 48, were arrested in York Region, near Toronto. They appeared by video conference in a Longueuil, Que., courtroom on Wednesday.

Prosecutors allege Yang and Wang kidnapped a boy in Brossard, Que., with the intent to confine or imprison him against his will and intended to transport him outside of Canada.

They are slated to appear in court again on Thursday, this time in person, for a bail hearing.

A publication ban prevents the release of information that would identify the child.

The police have not yet said what relationship the women have with the family whose son was taken from their home on Monday evening.

The abduction prompted police to issue an Amber Alert early Tuesday morning. It was cancelled later that day after the boy was found safe.
