Ryan Gosling received the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film on Jan. 13, and his Crazy Stupid Love co-star Steve Carell shared a story about Gosling's musical past while honouring him onstage.

"He was going to spend his Friday night playing music from some old folks in Glendale," Carell told the crowd, reflecting on the time Gosling invited him to see his gig at a seniors' centre with his band.

"Yeah, isn't that just adorable? Now, a movie star would have told that story on a talk show, would have used it, would have gotten some juice out of it, monetized it, maybe goes viral as a GIF or a meme, #RyanAtTheSeniorCenter," he said. "But not Ryan Gosling. He did it just to make some old folks happy. And I find that annoying as hell," he joked.

Gosling's band, Dead Man's Bones, released a music video featuring seniors for the song "Pa Pa Power" in 2010. The track was one of the singles from the band's self-titled 2009 album.

Gosling also picked up another honour on the weekend, receiving a Critics' Choice Award on Jan. 14 for the Barbie song "I'm Just Ken." His reaction went viral on social media.

"Ryan Gosling, this is as much your award as ours," songwriter Mark Ronson said while accepting the award. "You made the audience fall in love with this song with your matchless performance, so thank you."
