Watch Amanda Seyfried play the dulcimer while covering Joni Mitchell's California

The actor learned how to play the instrument during the pandemic, and her rendition is uncannily like the original.

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Amanda Seyfried paid a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 4, where Seyfried casually mentioned she plays the dulcimer.

"You know what happens when you're bored? You want to learn new things," Seyfried said, explaining how she learned to play the stringed instrument with all her free time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fallon, of course, happened to have a dulcimer behind him, and he handed it to Seyfried to play. She launched into the opening notes and verse of California by Joni Mitchell, offering the audience a short and striking cover, after referencing the need for more love for the tragedy-stricken state following wildfires earlier this year. Mitchell used the dulcimer on four tracks for her 1971 album, Blue

Seyfried also talked about her current crime show, Long Bright River, where she plays a cop in a Philadelphia neighbourhood struggling from the opioid crisis.

James Poyser from the Roots worked on the soundtrack for the show, and Seyfried pointed him out while he was sitting with fellow band members on The Tonight Show

Mitchell most recently performed at FireAid benefit concert earlier this year.
