Steven Sabados has shown us how to amp up plenty of different spaces on The Goods, from a grandparents' suite, to a living room, to a floral dining room and he always shares the design rules to follow. But his latest stunning space is perfect for a loft look, and it's entirely inspired by rock star glam. Think excess, statement pieces, plenty of colour, and forget the design rules altogether. Here's how to curate a space that offers up both comfort and style with tips on how to get the glam look without a recording contract.

Opt for excess

This doesn't necessarily mean money, but it does mean lots of layers! Sticking to one style is not the way to go. Instead, mix and match pieces from different eras to create a totally one-of-a-kind look. A true rock star space isn't modern or traditional or deco, it's entirely unique.

Strike a balance of old and new

Every new piece in this room is balanced with a vintage piece. This gives the room a carefully curated feeling and is a great way to display family heirlooms and inherited pieces. Steven cautions that you never want your space to look like a sanitized showroom, so this balanced vintage-meets-modern approach is best for representing a life lived well.

Layer up

Don't be precious about the art! Mix and match hanging techniques to display layers of artwork. Steven hung one piece traditionally and then layered another on top using chain suspended from the ceiling. If wall space is an issue, consider a standing easel. Layered rugs also make a luxe statement. This over-dyed antique green rug layered with a cowhide gives the room an eclectic feel, while adding in extra texture and colour throughout the space.

Crank up the volume

Bring bold colour into your space with eye-catching decor pieces and don't be be shy about choosing permanent upholstery in daring hues. In Steven's design, the green velvet sofa actually acts as a neutral when considered in the context of the whole room. The teal velvet chair is a stunning statement piece and for balance, the large pill-filled hand on the island was picked to match.

Customize your space

Put a multifunctional space to work with hidden storage and transformative furniture. This island is full of storage and is a great place to paint, entertain and gather for dinner. A hidden dining table creates a total double-duty piece. Steven also suggests using barn doors on a slider to conceal another room. This trick can be used to hide anything, such as a kitchen, a laundry room or even open storage in a small space. Because the doors slide instead of open, this trick can be incorporated even in cramped spaces.
