Better brows: A makeup expert shares how to get the eyebrows you've always wanted
Bold is not always best, and other mistakes you may be making
With today's beauty tricks, there's no need to rely on being born with perfect brows. The truth is, they're integral to the overall look of your face and they can shape it, for better or for worse — so they're worth putting some time into. And while full brows have been a thing for a while now, it can be hard to know when to start plucking and when to stop. If you're looking to up your brow game, but the perfect pair continues to evade you, fear not. Beauty expert Stephanie Gee explained how to give your eyebrows the makeover your face is craving. She demonstrated three faux pas on audience members and helped them achieve a face-flattering look.
People have started to take more risks when it comes to their brows, following popular trends. But Stephanie stressed that it's really important to keep brows individualized to your face, ensuring that their proportions complement your symmetry. There are also a few viral trends lately that definitely push the envelope.
The feathered brow
The squiggle brow
The crown brow
While she admires their creativity, Stephanie says that these looks are a nay for everyday, but would be perfect for a costume party. To show us some do's and don'ts, Stephanie worked wonders, shaping, filling and colouring these audience members's brows and gave them the brows best suited for their face.
The makeovers
Patchy and thinning
Nadia felt like her brows were getting patchier and thinner with age, so she usually used a pencil to extend the line of her brow, but instead Stephanie recommended tinting her brows. Tinting creates the appearance of more hair because the tint will pick up on the finer hairs that don't have much colour. Here's what Nadia's brows looked like after Stephanie worked her magic:
Stephanie tidied up the brow line and tinted, threaded and filled in Nadia's brows to elongate the end of them. Filling in her brows was also key, which created a natural fullness appropriate to her face, that will even help brighten her eyes. For brows like this, these techniques are great at creating more subtle fullness that really opens up the eyes.
Heavy and bulky
Jessica wanted to learn how to soften up her brows. Her daily routine was to wear heavy eyeliner to balance her thick brows but she had gotten into the habit of over-filling them, which looked heavy and bulky. To help her achieve a lighter makeup look, Stephanie tinted her eyebrows to give her a softer look while still keeping them full. Here's what she looked like after her brow makeover:
Stephanie left the tint on for a little while, which can tint the skin and create more fullness. She also filled in the brows with small strokes to make it look like like strands of hair versus colouring her brow in like a solid block. This created a natural, softer, youthful look that really compliments and opened up her face. For brows like this, Stephanie also recommends keeping them softer in the fronts and the ends, to give your brows a feathered look and combine with an eyeliner that will lift and open to reveal your eyes.
Too light
Julie's daughters were constantly telling her to fill in her brows because they were too light, but Julie didn't want them to look too harsh with her blond hair. So Stephanie opted for a soft brow tint to give Julie's face more framing and pronunciation. Here's what she looked like after Stephanie transformed her brows:
Stephanie kept Julie's brows light and along with a soft tint, used a blond pencil to fill them. Stephanie also suggests that that just brushing your brows through will make them look a lot softer. For brows like this, Stephanie recommends unsing a tinted brow gel that helps to pick up on small hairs, because it can be hard to create shape with just a pencil. This helped make Julie's eyes pop while keeping a natural, soft look.
