The Resort 2019 trends to know before your next warm-weather getaway

Stylish looks to put you in a travel-ready mood

Depending on where you live in Canada, it's probably pretty cold right now. There's a reason that Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic are some of the most popular overseas destinations for Canadian travelers — the idea of a sun-drenched, beach-adjacent holiday tends to have near-universal appeal when temperatures dip so far below freezing.

Conveniently enough an entire mini fashion season — generally called Resort, Cruise or Pre-Spring — is dedicated to the cause of the mid-winter getaway, which traditionally features brighter colours and lighter-weight fabrics. And, even if you're not headed on vacation anytime soon, the best Resort trends offer vibrant ideas for livening up your mid-winter wardrobe.

Beachy tie-dye

Eye-catching and bohemian in spirit, tie-dye made quite a few appearances in the Resort collections, including at Prabal Gurung, where the colourful looks were styled with sleek, sculptural white heels. Expect even more surf-inspired, tie dye goodness everywhere come Spring, and not just on cotton tees.

Bold stripes

Great stripes will never really go out of fashion. And, as seen in the collections at labels such as MSGM and Beaufille, stripes and pleats are looking particularly fresh together. The best ones from Resort 2019 offer inventive, intriguing palettes that are sure to please; just look for colour combinations that catch your eye.

Off the shoulder

Form-grazing and yet relaxed, asymmetric tops and dresses with off-the-shoulder details continue to appeal — Toronto-based designer Sid Neigum included a number of covetable tailored, asymmetric styles for Resort 2019. The key to rocking this trend even in cooler climes? Layer; wear pieces over a base layer of fitted, fine knits through early spring.

Mixed florals

London-based Erdem Moralioglu and New York-based Tanya Taylor — Canadian designers both — again embraced an profusion of pretty florals in intriguing combinations for Resort. Ideally, you would want to layer and mix multiple floral prints in one outfit, creating a veritable garden scene that's  grounded with smart, white leather shoes.
