Love making your own jewellery? Here’s a step by step guide for creating a colourful, on-trend statement necklace you can rock all summer long.

Here's what you'll need:

• White embroidery thread (x12 packages)
• Leather scraps
• Chain
• Lobster clasp
• Large and small jump rings
• Spray paint
• Fabric dye (dark and light colour)
• Masking tape
• Clothing pins
• Coat hanger
• Comb
• Scissors
• Hot glue gun + glue
• Hole punch
• Jewelry plyers
• Glass bowl
• Pencil or marker

Here's how to do it:

1. Lay a long, thick piece of masking tape sticky side up and tape down the edges. This is where you will build your necklace.
2. Unravel your white embroidery thread and cut long strips (ours were about 14 inches) and individually place on your tape. Note: Make sure each strip of thread is as close to the next as possible.
3. Once you have reached your desired width (ours was 6.5 inches) gently pat down the thread to make sure that it is held in place.
4. Now it is time to prep your dye. In a kettle, heat water until it comes to a boil. Fill a large glass bowl ¾ of the way with water and add your dark dye. Stir until completely mixed.
5. Using your clothing pins attach your necklace to the coat hanger so it hangs in place. Dip your thread in the dye ½ way and let sit for 10 seconds.
6. Remove the thread and hang to dry. Note: For a faster drying time we used a blow dryer!
7. Once the dipped thread is completely dry remove from hanger and lay it on a flat surface. Gently remove the tape from the opposite end and cut off a new piece of tape to place on the dipped end of the thread. Note: The new piece of tape on the dark dipped end is now the top of your necklace.
8. Repeat steps 4,5 and 6 with a 2nd colour of dye.
9. Now that you have created your ombre dip dye effect with a dark and light colour remove the necklace from the coat hanger and lay on a flat surface. With a comb gently brush the thread to untangle.
10. Using an iron on low heat iron out the creases.
11. Take another piece of tape and fold it in half creating a tube-like shape where all sides are sticky. Place halfway down the already existing tape on the top of the necklace and fold the thick piece of tape in half (essentially closing and holding all your thread in place).
12. Now, using your leather scraps draw a half moon shape with a pencil or marker. Take your xacto knife and cut out your shape. This will be one of two sides.
13. Take your hole punch and punch two holes on either end of your leather cut out. Note: As close to the top edge(s) as possible without breaking the barrier.
14. Take your gold spray paint and now spray both pieces to give it that metal effect.
15. Once dry, take two jump rings and using jewelry plyers open up the opening so you can hoop it through your hole(s) in the leather. Take your plyers again and close the opening.
16. Now take your long gold chain and measure where you want the necklace to fall on your chest. For this project, each chain was 9 inches long.
17. Once you have established your desired length take your ruler and a pair of scissors and cut your chain to that length. You should now have 2 identical pieces of chain.
18. At each base of your chain now loop two small jump rings through so you can attach it to the larger jump rings connected to the leather.
19. Once completed, take two small jump rings again and connect them to the top of your chains. Looking at your necklace face on connect a lobster clasp to the left side of your chain, do this by looping the hole of the clasp to the hole of your jump ring.
20. On the opposite chain attach a large jump ring to the small jump ring.
21. You have now created the foundation of your necklace! Now take your other leather strap that isn't connected and loop it through the large jump rings attached to the other piece of leather.
22. Now take your dip-dyed fringe necklace and hot glue a long strip in the middle of your leather strap. Place your fringe necklace on the glue and press firmly down adhering it to one piece of the leather.
23. Using your hot glue gun, cover the rest of the leather in glue so you can close and secure it with your second piece of leather.
24. Voila! You have made a rad ombre fringe necklace.
