Charmaine A. Nelson is a Provost Professor of Art History at the UMass Amherst and the Director of the Slavery North Initiative. She has written seven books including The Color of Stone: Sculpting the Black Female Subject in Nineteenth-Century America (2007). Her media work includes ABC, CBC, CTV, BBC One, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and PBS. Her fellowships and honours include a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair (2010) and a Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University (2017-2018). She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2022), a member of the American Antiquarian Society, and the founder and editor-in-chief of Black Maple Magazine.
