Canada Reads 2018 Day One: Watch the replay
The opening round of Canada Reads 2018 kicked off March 26, 2018 at 11 a.m. ET. Over four days, the panellists will bring their diverse perspectives to this year's theme: One Book to Open Your Eyes. This year's host is comedian Ali Hassan.
Each panellist was given the opportunity to make an opening pitch for their respective book, then defend it when the question turned to whether their book was truly the one that all Canadians need to read right now.
The Day One debates — which touched on themes such as empathy, inclusivity, self-healing and understanding the human condition — were engaging, thoughtful and persuasive.
The 2018 contenders are:
- Tahmoh Penikett defending American War by Omar El Akkad
- Jeanne Beker defending Forgiveness by Mark Sakamoto
- Mozhdah Jamalzadah defending The Boat People by Sharon Bala
- Jully Black defending The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline
- Greg Johnson defending Precious Cargo by Craig Davidson
