Why Tatiana Maslany was excited to lend her voice to the new kids' movie Butterfly Tale
The Emmy-winning Canadian actor talks to Q's Tom Power about her latest project and her love of voice acting
Before Orphan Black, She-Hulk and her big Emmy win, Tatiana Maslany was just a kid in Regina who was obsessed with theatre and acting.
In her new animated kids' movie, Butterfly Tale, she voices Jennifer, a monarch butterfly who's afraid of heights. The family feature was entirely Montreal-made and produced, and includes notable Canadian talent like actor Mena Massoud and singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes, who provided an original song for the soundtrack.
"I love being part of a Canadian production," Maslany tells Q's Tom Power about what drew her to the project. "Growing up, a lot of my sense of humour was built from cartoons.… I've always revered voice actors — I think that they're geniuses. I think that what they do is way harder than it seems and way more kind of dexterous and athletic than it seems. So I was super excited to get to try that out....
"You don't have a scene partner. Mena had recorded everything so I could work off of what he had recorded, but I'm not playing with him…. It's like tapping into a place of imagination, similar to when I do an audiobook or something, where you're, like, kind of in this little zone, and you have to create everything yourself. It is like being a kid."
