He thinks about death a lot, but it keeps him motivated to pursue countless different art projects
'I'm almost 40, so I have 20 years left to be creative and good'
Peter Ricq is an award-winning creative force living and working in Vancouver, B.C. Besides working as a visual artist, he's also a television producer, writer, art director, designer, director, music composer and performer.
In 2005, Ricq and his partners sold his first animated TV series and he then went on to co-create and art direct several other animated series for Disney and Teletoon. He released his first graphic novel in 2016 and has just completed his first feature documentary film, as well as his first live action dark comedy/horror feature film Dead Shack. His band HUMANS released their first full-length album, which was nominated for a JUNO, in 2015, and their music video for the song "Tell Me" — which he directed — has won a Leo Award, while "Water Water" received an MMVA nomination for best MuchFact video.
So what exactly keeps Ricq driven to pursue all of these different projects? He explains: "I think about death a lot, which is morbid and shitty, but I do think about it — like, 'How much time do I have?' I'm 36. I'm almost 40, so I have 20 years left to be creative and good."
He adds: "Why don't you do what you want to do? It's what I do. I just make things that I want to see."
